But a fire pit interior is a different environment altogether. Direct flame exposure and repeated heating and cooling cycles can place far more thermal stress on the material than a standard hardscape surface was designed to handle.
That is why we draw a clear line between brick pavers and firebricks. Firebricks are manufactured specifically for high-heat conditions. Regular pavers are not. So if the goal is to line the inside of a fire pit or any area that will face direct flame, we would choose a refractory material instead of standard paving units.
Where are brick pavers safe to use around a fire feature?
Brick pavers can still play an important role in a fire feature design, even if they are not the best choice for direct flame exposure.
When we talk with homeowners about fire pits, one of the biggest misconceptions we see is the idea that a material must either be safe everywhere or unsafe everywhere. In reality, it depends on how close that material gets to the heat source and what kind of protection is built into the design.
Brick pavers are generally safe to use in the areas surrounding a fire feature, especially when they are installed as part of the patio, seating zone, or transition space around the pit. These areas benefit from the strength and visual appeal of brick pavers without subjecting them to the most intense thermal stress.
They can also work on the outer portions of a fire pit structure in certain designs, but this only makes sense when the interior area that faces the flame is properly protected. For example, if a fire pit includes a firebrick liner, refractory block, or metal insert, the decorative outer shell can sometimes use brick pavers as a finish material.

Kiln-fired brick pavers
Kiln-fired brick pavers, on the other hand, are fired up to 1800°F and easily withstand the heat of flames, even upon direct contact. This makes them perfect options for fire pits of any shape and form.
Firebricks
Firebricks, also called refractory bricks, are much denser than regular bricks and also go through a kiln process to be able to withstand scalding-hot temperatures.
This variant is ideal for fire pits, especially if combined with cement and fire clay mortar as a base, considering the fact that these are used in furnaces and industrial ovens around the world.
Although a little bit expensive, they are the safest and most long-lasting option by far. A proper fire pit made out of firebricks, under due care, can last a long time.
